Freiburg Excursion Destinations and Film Recommendations

Public Means of Transport

Freiburg offers many beautiful paths, day trip- and hiking destinations.

With the Regiokarte (day ticket, 3-day WelcomeKarte for visitors, monthly ticket, transferable or not transferable) you ride throughout the whole area of the Regioticket; for students, a “Semesterticket” is available (official information brochure in English and in German [PDF]). Also railway excursions to the Suisse border region are possible, for example to the beautiful Basel, requiring only a small surcharge for the remaining distance outside of the area of the Regio ticket; videos: “Beautiful Views Of Basel City Switzerland. A Trip to the Schloßberg, Walk to the Kanonenplatz

On the Schloßberg (castle hill), you have the most beautiful Freiburg panoramas. There are several ascents. The initial position of this recommended route is in the city center.

Start at the Bertholdsbrunnen and pass the Münster Church to get to the Karlsplatz, where you will see parking tourist busses. Thence you walk over the pedestrian bridge (or across the intersection) into the Stadtgarten, to which comprehensive aerial perspective overviews are available. Several routes lead up to the mountain. People who are not so fit by foot can ride up with the Schloßbergbahn; watch “GERMANY: Freiburg city & Schlossberg tower [HD]”.

Having arrived on top, you have the possibility to go for a meal in a restaurant next to the top station. From the Schloßbergbahn station, optionally, you can go up to the highest viewpoint on the Schloßberg tower where you get an all round visibility on Freiburg and the environment. Or you walk to the Kanonenplatz. There, you also have a great all-around view of Freiburg; Bird's-eye view on the Kanonenplatz.

Afterwards, you either can walk up to the Small Kanonenplatz (all-around green panorama view), or you walk down to the Schwabentor. On the way there, below the Kanonenplatz is the Greifeneggschlössle, a restaurant with a beer garden and a great view. Overall overview Kanonenplatz and Schwabentor, Schwabentor aerial view.

The Kuratorium Freiburger Schloßberg e.V. informs on historical backgrounds and provides a map, “Erlebniskarte Schlossberg” (in German) ready for download, with many excursion destinations.

The Dreisam

Freiburg's river, the Dreisam is only a stone's throw away from the inner-city. Ponds and Lakes, the Old Cemetary
and further Parks in the City Zone

Surrounded by green, with a restaurant and a boat rental, the Freiburger Waldsee invites to moody walks and excursions. Images on the Waldsee, video “Waldsee Freiburg - 4K”.

In the west of Freiburg, within easy, direct reach by tram, the Seepark is located. The former Landesgartenschau-terrain offers many walks, a beer garden and a boat rental as well as an own belvedere with panorama view. Extract of the Seepark-article of freiburg.de (April 07, 2016) on its attractions (translated): ”Features: Japanese garden, children's playground, eco-station, stadium, minigolf facility, boules field [Pétanque], lawn, belvedere, Pontoon bridge, boat rental“ (“Ausstattung: Japanischer Garten, Kinderspielplatz, Ökostation, Stadion, Minigolfanlage, Bouleplatz, Liegewiese, Aussichtsturm, Pontonsteg, Bootsverleih”).

With the Cableway up to the Schauinslandberg
“Schau ins Land”-Berg = “Look into the Country”-Mountain

On July 17, 1930, the Schauinslandbahn opened. Using a groundbreaking new technology for cableways and offering its passengers beautiful panorama sceneries, it soon became a tourist attraction.

You reach the valley station of the Schauinslandberg cableway comfortably by streetcar and bus. In the top station, you can fortify yourself in the restaurant. Many walking routes and excursion destinations offer you impressive landscapes.

Official website of the Schauinslandseilbahn, in English: www.schauinslandbahn.de/en. Look it up before your trip. Twice a year, in spring and in fall, the cableway is closed due to maintenance work.
